Now more than ever before, it is so apparent that the biggest homophobes out there are so obviously fighting their own demons for being gay themselves. The most obvious is Bishop Eddie Long. First, three young men come forward alleging that Long had unsolicited sex with them when they were in their teens. Now, a forth has come forward, which is not unusual. Some would jump in and say the fourth guy is just trying to catch the gravy train. I say we become more brave in numbers. And young, gay black men don't just go on national television and admit to sleeping with the leader of their church - no matter how much money they think they might get.
The funny thing is that Bishop Long has a well-documented history of being a HUGE homophobe. For years, he has preached against homosexuality. Can I get an "Amen" here? Oh and what about those pictures of the Bishop posing in spandex and muscle shirts that he sent to these young men? Hmmm...
Then, there's our old buddy Ted Haggard. Another mega preacher from a mega church who loved the boys. Well, in Ted's case, he loved the big, burly male escorts. Yes, for years Haggard preached against homosexuality. When he was caught with his proverbial pants down, preacher Ted first denied everything, but eventually caved in and admitted to sleeping around with men. But then he said it was the devil's work and he is now saved and loves women again. So there.
This week we have the "Bullies" in the news. There have been a handful of stories about young gay men who have been bullied for being gay at school and out in public by homophobic young men and women. A couple of these young men have been so traumatized by the taunting and physical attacks that they have gone so far as to take their own lives - sadly, not an uncommon story, but with the advent of Twitter, Facebook and instant news we are now instantly privy to these horrible situations.
Finally, we've seen our share of lawmakers who have gone on record to push for legislation that would deny gays equal rights to all. Senator Larry Craig comes to mind. He was arrest for lewd conduct in the men's restroom at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport in 2007. He did not seek re-election. Oh and yes, he was "fooling around" with another man in that restroom. Years before, Craig was accused of having sex with teenage male congressional pages. Of course, the Senator denied those charges as well. It's all a conspiracy, folks. He even accused Bill Clinton of being a "nasty, bad, naughty boy..." for the Monica Lewinsky scandal. And, of course, he voted against measures that would allow same sex marriage as well as legislation to protect homosexuals under hate crimes acts. Of course he did.
Is there a solution to all of this bullying? All of this homophobia? It all goes back to OUTING. Love the concept or hate it - I think this is how we expose bullies and politicians who vote against that of which they are to "protect" their image. This goes way, way back... but in recent times it started with the Stonewall riots in 1969 where gay rights advocates chanted "Out of the closets, Into the streets!".
According to Wikipedia: In 2004, gay rights activist Michael Rogers outed Edward Schrock, a Republican Congressman from Virginia. Rogers posted a story on his website revealing that Schrock used an interactive phone sex service to meet other men for sex. Schrock did not deny this, and announced on August 30, 2004 that he would not seek re-election. Rogers said that he outed Schrock to punish him for his hypocrisy in voting for the Marriage Protection Act and signing on as a co-sponsor of the Federal Marriage Amendment.
Even Congressman Barney Frank thinks outing is appropriate and legitimate in some cases - for example, if the individual is actively working against LGBT rights. He best clarified his stance by stating during the 2006 Mark Foley scandal, "I think there's a right to privacy. But the right to privacy should not be a right to hypocrisy. And people who want to demonize other people shouldn't then be able to go home and close the door and do it themselves."
I think you get the point. So let's put a stop to all of the bullying. Let's put a stop to all of the bad legislation that aims to devalue gays and restrict our rights. Those who work against the day-to-day living, equal rights and causes of lesbians and gays, be they bullies or political figures, need to be outed ASAP, as it is blatantly obvious that a huge percentage of the Biggest Homophobes Actually Fight What They Are - Which Is Gay!
